It is effortless to add, edit, and remove YouTube channel managers, and I’m going to show you exactly how to do this. For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to split this into two: personal YouTube channels and brand accounts.
Personal channel management
- From your YouTube screen, tap on your profile image in the top right-hand corner, and go to the YouTube studio.
- Once on YouTube studio, click on the settings button in the bottom left-hand corner.
- From the pop-up that displays, you should see a permissions tab to the left. This will indicate who has access to your YouTube channel.
- To invite a new manager, tap on the invite button in the top right-hand corner, and add email addresses to invite them to manage your channel.
- Below that is an access drop-down that gives you four options. Do make sure to assign the right permission to each person you are inviting to your channel.
- Once satisfied with your selection, hit done, and the invitee will receive an email that he can accept within 30 days to become a manager of your YouTube channel.
- Still, on the permissions page, you can update a manager’s access rights by tapping on their current role, including removing them as a manager from your YouTube channel altogether.
Brand channel management
Now let see how to manage your brand account. To do this, you first need to convert your channel into a brand account.
How to add managers for a brand account:
- We will begin in the YouTube studio this time. However, when you go to settings, you won’t find a permissions tab on the left-hand side. Instead, you must go to the channel tab, advanced settings at the top of this section, and then down the bottom of this screen. You will want to select, manage your YouTube account.
- From this screen, tap on the add or remove managers link, and then click on the manage permissions button.
- What displays next depends on what role you have on the channel — and it will give what you can really do.
Managers have full access to the YouTube channel. Owners have full access to the YouTube channel and can also change other managers’ permission on the channel. Communication managers appear to be a bit jobless— they have no access to YouTube at all.
Note that in the top right-hand corner of the permissions pop-up screen, you can invite new managers through email and set up their permissions here as well from the drop-down.
How to remove managers from YouTube?
You have added them; let’s now see what you need to do to remove them. It is simple! Just do this:
- Go to studio.youtube.com.
- On the left-hand side, click Settings.
- Click Permissions.
- Go to the person you would like to remove and click the drop-down menu.
- Select a new role or click Remove access.
Note that Channel Permissions do not yet support some parts of Studio. So invited users won’t be able to access these even though the owner can. These include:
- YouTube.com and any of the YouTube apps (including Studio Mobile)
- Features that aren’t yet built into Studio like info cards and end screens
- Live Control Room
What can a YouTube manager do?
A YouTube manager can either have a Primary Owner, Owner, or Manager role. You will see another role for Community Manager, but they cannot manage your account.
Primary Owner
Summary
- Add or delete other owners/ managers
- Delete account
- Upload, edit and delete videos
- View analytics
- Can’t remove self from role
The primary owner can do everything except removing himself as the primary owner. Nevertheless, he cannot remove his own access to the account unless he transfers that primary ownership to someone else first.
Note that they can be only one Primary Owner on the YouTube account. That means, if you set up the YouTube account, then you are the Primary Owner – unless you have already added another Owner and moved your status to them.
Owner
Summary
- Add or delete other managers/owners
- Delete account
- Upload, edit and delete videos
- View analytics
- Edit account details
- Remove self from role
Owners can do everything, including making themselves the primary owner. An Owner has all the abilities of a Primary Owner – the difference being that an Owner can effortlessly remove themselves without having to transfer ownership. A YouTube account can have multiple Owners.
Caveat! Make sure you trust the individuals you assign as an Owner as they have a high level of access to your account!
Manager
Summary
- Upload, edit, or delete videos
- Remove self from role
- View analytics
- Can’t delete the account
- Can’t add or delete other managers or owners
Managers can do everything else, like upload videos, edit videos, and delete videos. They will be able to edit the account information and see channel analytics but cannot delete the account. A Manager can remove himself from the role. A YouTube account can have multiple Managers.
The Manager role is suitable for employees and if you outsource video marketing to people who need access to your account.
Community Manager
A Community Manager cannot do anything on YouTube. He doesn’t have access to YouTube accounts, so he cannot manage your videos. This is simply a role designed for other tools linked to Google (such as replying to reviews on your Google business profile), so it is ok to ignore it for anything to do with your YouTube account.
